Art Historical Context
This delicate etching by Frans van Mieris the Younger captures the poignant biblical moment when Abraham reluctantly sends Hagar and their son Ishmael into the wilderness, following Sarah’s demand. Created in 1706, the small-scale print (just 123 by 96 mm) is a mirror-image copy after Rembrandt’s earlier etching of the same subject. Such reproductive prints were common in the Dutch Republic, allowing artists to study and circulate the compositions of revered masters while honing their own technical skill.
