Art Historical Context

This etching captures the dramatic mythological confrontation between the hero Hercules and the monstrous giant Cacus, who had stolen Hercules’s cattle. Created between 1540 and 1545, the print reproduces a design by Rosso Fiorentino, one of the leading figures of the Mannerist movement. Antonio Fantuzzi, an Italian printmaker active at the French court, translated Rosso’s dynamic composition into etching, allowing the dramatic scene to reach a wider audience beyond the royal châteaux.
