This exquisite album of twelve landscape leaves was created in 1699 by Bada Shanren (Zhu Da), one of China’s most celebrated eccentric painters of the early Qing dynasty. A descendant of the Ming imperial family, Bada became a Buddhist monk after the dynasty’s fall in 1644, channeling his sense of loss and reclusion into art. His landscapes from this late period are spare yet powerful, using minimal ink washes and bold, abbreviated brushstrokes to evoke misty mountains and solitary retreats that reflect both personal withdrawal and subtle political nostalgia.
