Art Historical Context

This delicate etching, titledLandschap met houten brug* (Landscape with Wooden Bridge), was created by the French printmaker Pierre François Basan (1733–1797). Measuring just 76 by 198 millimeters, the work reproduces a landscape originally designed and etched by Rembrandt. Basan specialized in reproductive prints that made celebrated Old Master compositions available to new audiences, and this impression first appeared in the 1819 Paris publication *Recueil de Quatre-Vingt-Cinq estampes originales*, issued by his relative Henry Louis Basan.
