Jean-Étienne Liotard’s pastel portrait of his wife, Marie Fargues, captures an intimate moment from the mid-eighteenth century. Painted between 1756 and 1758, the life-size image shows Marie seated gracefully on a divan, dressed in elegant Turkish costume. Her relaxed pose, with her head resting on one hand, conveys both quiet contemplation and personal warmth. The choice of pastel on vellum is particularly noteworthy.
