Claude Gillot’s “Ontwerp voor een wanddecoratie” is delicate pen drawing that captures the artist’s flair for ornamental invention. Created sometime between 1683 and 1722, the sheet served as a preparatory design for wall decoration, a genre in which Gillot excelled. Working in the decades just before the full flowering of the Rococo, he helped shift French taste away from the heavy formality of Louis XIV toward lighter, more playful motifs drawn from theater, fable, and exotic fantasy. Executed simply in pen, the 205 × 343 mm composition would have allowed Gillot to explore rhythmic arabesques, delicate figures, or whimsical grotesques at actual scale.
