Ugo da Carpi’s *Petrus preekt in Jeruzalem* (1608) is a fine example of the chiaroscuro woodcut, a technique the Italian printmaker helped pioneer in the early sixteenth century. By carving and printing from multiple woodblocks—each inked in a different tone—the artist creates subtle gradations of light and shadow that mimic the effect of a wash drawing.
