James McNeill Whistler, American artist born in 1834 spent much of his career in Europe, created *Rotherhithe* in 1860. This work captures figures in the riverside district of Rotherhithe on London's Thames, a gritty hub of shipping and trade during the Industrial Revolution. At age 26, Whistler was transitioning from his early realist phase in Paris to bolder experiments, influenced by Japanese prints and contemporaries like Courbet.
