Art Historical Context

This elegant sheet from the late 18th to mid-19th century showcases the craftsmanship of the Remondini Family renowned Italian printers from Bassano delappa, or possibly an anonymous workshop in their tradition. Titled *Sheet with two borders with atop a floral garland a navy background*, it the decorative papers they mass-produced for use in bookbinding, stationery, furniture inlays, or early wallpapers. The deep navy backdrop provides a striking contrast, highlighting the delicate lace motifs perched atop lush floral garlands—symbols of opulence and nature's abundance popular in neoclassical and Romantic-era interiors. Crafted as a relief print from wood or metal blocks, this medium allowed for efficient, high-volume reproduction of intricate textures. The raised surfaces of the blocks transferred bold, tactile patterns onto paper, mimicking the fineness of lace while enabling affordable luxury for middle-class homes. At 14 1/8 × 17 11/16 inches, the sheet served as a versatile sample, demonstrating repeatable border designs that could frame larger surfaces. Housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Drawings and Prints department (The Elisha Whittelsey Collection, 1948), this piece offers a window into the Remondini workshop's innovative role in democratizing ornamentation, bridging artisanal skill with industrial precursors during Europe's design revolution.
