In the bustling kabuki of Edo-period Japan (modern-day Tokyo), Katsukawa Shunsho captured the intensity of star actor Nakamura Nakazo I in color woodblock print from around 1780. Titled *The Actor Nakamura Nakazo as Saito Sanemori the Play Kitekaeruiki no Wakayaka it depicts the performer in the role of the tragic warrior Saito Sanemori during a production at the Nakamura Theater in the eleventh lunar month. Shunsho, leading figure in the ukiyo-e ("pictures of the floating world") school, specialized in yakusha-e—lifelike portraits of kabuki actors that celebrated their celebrity status and theatrical prowess. This hosoban-format print, measuring a slender 30.4 × 15 cm, was designed for easy collection and display, reflecting the era's booming market for affordable art among urban merchants and fans.
