Art Historical Context
This 1882 oil-on-canvas by Hans Makart is decorative design intended for the wall of Empress Elisabeth's in the Hermesvilla. by William Shakespeare's *A Midsummer Night's*, the central scene portrays the love pairs Hermia andander as well as Helena Demetrius. An piece of canvas on the right depicts a candelabra. The Hermesvilla, a hunting and summer villa in Vienna-Lainz, was erected between 1882 and 1886 after designs by architect Carl Hasenauer. Makart planned this composition for the Empress's private chamber, but he did not execute the mural himself. The task was entrusted to his students and collaborators, including Eduard Charlmont, Julius Viktor Berger, the decorative painter Pietro Isella, and Carl Rudolf Huber. Huber largely followed Makart's design on the north wall but substituted the central pair with Titania and Oberon, likely at the Empress's request. Now part of the Belvedere Collection, this painting offers a window into the decorative arts of late 19th-century Vienna and the personalization of imperial interiors.
