Art Historical Context

This dynamic folio from the *Razmnama*—the Persian translation of the ancient Indian epic *Mahabata*, commissioned by Mughal Emperor Akbar—captures a thrilling battle scene from the Kurukshetra War. Titled *"Fighting Arjuna, Sus Unleashes the Suparna which Invokes Garuda,"* it shows the heroic archer Arjuna locked in combat with Susarma, son of Trigarta's. As Susarma releases the celestial Suparna astram (weapon), the divine eagle Garuda materializes in a burst of power, swooping amid rearing horses, hurtling chariots, and fierce warriors. Such illustrations bridged Hindu mythology with Persian literary traditions, reflecting Akbar's vision of cultural harmony. Created around 1616–17 by the renowned Mughal painter 'Abd al-Rahim ibn Muhammad Bairam Khan Khan-i Khanan, the work showcases the exquisite finesse of Mughal miniature painting. Delicate ink outlines define fluid figures and mythical forms, while vibrant opaque watercolors and shimmering gold heighten the drama on the 13⅝ × 8½-inch paper page. This codex format, typical of illuminated manuscripts, invited intimate study, blending Persianate precision with Indian narrative vigor. Housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Islamic Art Department (Rogers Fund, 1955), this piece exemplifies the Mughal court's artistic patronage, where elite workshops produced treasures fusing East and West. Visitors can marvel at how it immortalizes epic valor, mythical spectacle, and technical mastery in a single, luminous frame.
