Elihu Vedder (1836–1923 was an American artist celebrated his symbolic and allegorical works that bridged Romantic traditions with emerging Symbolist ideas. Created around 1895, “Study for ‘Muse of History’” is a preparatory piece that reveals Vedder’s thoughtful process in developing larger compositions. Such studies allowed him to refine the pose, gesture, presence of a central figure before committing to a finished painting or mural.
