### The Triumph of Love from *The Triumphs of Petr* In this captivating etching from around 1548–49, Dutch artist Dirck Volcksz Coornhert to life one of the most celebrated allegories of the Renaissance: the *Triumphs of Petrarch*. Inspired by the 14th-century Italian poet Francescoarch's *Trionfi*, the series depicts a grand procession where virtues and vices triumph over one another—here, Love reigns supreme. Coornhert, a skilled printmaker of the Northern Renaissance, captures triumphant Cupid, bow and arrow in hand, surrounded by symbols of conquest like crowns, helmets, and hats, evoking the era's fascination with classical antiquity and humanist themes of passion's power. Etching, Coornhert's chosen medium, was a revolutionary technique in the 16th century. By drawing directly into a wax ground on a copper plate and immersing it in acid, artists gained fluid, expressive lines impossible with traditional engraving. This intimate plate (9 x 6 7/8 in.) allowed for detailed narratives that could be widely disseminated, making complex literary ideas accessible to collectors across Europe. Coornhert's precise yet dynamic style reflects the innovative spirit of Antwerp's print workshops, where he thrived. Today, this work graces the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Drawings and Prints department, a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Robert J. Massar in 1986.
