Created around 1548–49 by the Dutch printmaker Dirck Volckertsz Coornhert, *The Triumph of Time* belongs to a series of etchings inspired by Francesco Petrarch’s celebrated fourteenth-century poem cycle, *The Triumphs*. In this allegorical work, Time—often personified with an hourglass—overtakes Fame, underscoring the Renaissance fascination with life’s transience and the inevitable passage toward eternity. Coornhert’s etching technique allows for delicate, precise lines that capture both the drama of the procession and the symbolic details, such as the hourglass prominently featured among the male figures. As a Northern European artist working during the Reformation era, he translated Italian poetic ideals into a medium that made these moral lessons widely accessible through prints. Housed today in the Metropolitan Museum’s Department of Drawings and Prints, the sheet exemplifies how Renaissance themes of mortality and virtue traveled across Europe, inviting viewers to reflect on time’s quiet authority over human achievement.
