Art Historical Context

Francesco Bartolozzi, an Italian engraver who spent much of his career in England, created this delicate vignette in 1798 as an illustration for *The Gardens*, a celebrated poem by the French writer Abbé Jacques Delille. The work reflects the late eighteenth-century taste for refined literary imagery, where artists collaborated with poets to evoke the beauty of nature and cultivated landscapes. As a print held in the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s collection, the piece demonstrates Bartolozzi’s skill in producing intimate book illustrations that reached wide audiences.
