Ugo da Carpi’s *Wonderbare visvangst* (Miraculous Catch of Fish), dated 1609, is a fine example of a chiaroscuro woodcut measuring 241 by 349 millimetres. The scene depicts the biblical story in which Christ instructs his disciples to cast their nets once more, resulting in an abundant catch. Created through the layering of multiple woodblocks inked in different tones, the print achieves subtle gradations of light and shadow that give the composition a painterly depth rarely found in conventional black-and-white woodcuts.
