Art Historical Context

Ugo da Carpi’s *Wonderbare visvangst* (Miraculous Catch of Fish), dated 1609, captures the New Testament scene in which Christ directs his disciples to an abundant haul after a night of empty nets. Executed as a chiaroscuro woodcut measuring 255 × 360 mm, the print employs multiple blocks to build rich tonal contrasts, a technique da Carpi helped pioneer in Italy.
